In an interview, Pakistan’s Defence Minister, Khawaja Asif admitted that his country will continue conducting military operations against Afghanistan because Afghan militants launching attacks against Pakistani security forces and ordinary Pakistanis are using Afghan territory as a launching ground. Well, to be honest, Asif had to justify the strikes as measures of self-defense that cannot be regarded as unlawful; he also shrugged off Taliban’s complaints over the sovereignty infringements.
This statement is made at time when relations between the two countries are strained as Pakistan accuses Afghanistan of hosting the Pakistani Taliban (TTP) and not taking any action against the outfit as demanded by Islamabad. On the other hand, the Taliban has also expressed itself about the strikes by Pakistan as irresponsible and threats follow.
This has been said by Asif after the start of the operation; Resolve for Stability in Pakistan that was launched to fight terrorism and violence in the country. However, still, in response to Asif’s comment about the goals of the operation being domestic, he also noted that the threats to Chinese projects and its people in Pakistan would also be dealt with, which serves as a main concern for Beijing.
As a result, issues about the role and balance of power in the region together with the effects of the Pakistani military operations on Afghanistan and China have emerged. People all over the world pay close attention to the situation and call for calm as well as for peaceful negotiations in order to resolve the conflict.
